Tesla FSD V14 Finally Gets Speed Limits Right
The first thing I noticed was speed accuracy in the lower zones. Tesla FSD V13 would often ignore posted speed limits altogether, sometimes dropping from 100km/h to 80km/h on the freeway for no reason, or getting stuck showing 60km/h when the limit had changed to 80km/h. It was inconsistent enough. I never fully trusted it.
Tesla FSD V14 picks up 50, 60, 70, 80 and 100km/h limits without hesitation. It settles onto the limit within a second or two of the sign changing, rather than drifting toward it over a few hundred metres. On a stretch through roadworks with a 40km/h limit, it slowed down cleanly and held the number the whole way through.

Tesla FSD V13 was cautious to a fault. Getting from 80km/h to 100km/h took three or four minutes, which meant constantly overriding it with the accelerator to keep pace with traffic. The same confidence shows up at what’s arguably the biggest roundabout in regional Victoria. Tesla FSD V13 handled the roundabout correctly but crawled through it, frustrating other drivers behind. Tesla FSD V14 moved through the same roundabout smoothly, indicated early, and merged into the correct lane without the hesitation I’d grown used to.
Lane discipline has improved too. When surrounding traffic drifts between 80km/h and 110km/h in a 100km/h zone, Tesla FSD V14 reads the gaps and slots itself into the correct lane on its own, something Tesla FSD V13 never managed reliably.
New Features Worth Knowing About
Alongside the speed and acceleration improvements, the spring update brings a handful of smaller changes worth knowing about before your first drive.
Auto park now lets you specify a location. Rather than defaulting to the nearest kerb or driveway, you tell the car to park in a car park, and it navigates there and reverses into a spot on its own. It’s not perfect; mine ended up a little close to the line, but it’s a genuine step up from Tesla FSD V13, which wouldn’t attempt this at all.
There’s also a new LED strip inside the cabin, flashing when a car sits alongside you as you indicate, and a new FSD stats menu tracking kilometres driven on self-driving. Neither changes how the car drives, but they’re a sign Tesla wants people using the feature more, not less.
Saying “Hey Grok” now wakes the assistant hands-free, rather than pressing the steering wheel button first. It’s a small change, but it fits the same pattern of Tesla nudging you toward voice control over the touchscreen. I test Grok in Australia on Version 13.

Here’s where Tesla FSD V14 falls short. Everything above changes the moment the speed limit hits 110km/h, which is the standard limit across most of regional Victoria and a huge share of my own driving.
Instead of holding 110km/h the way it holds 80km/h and 100km/h, the car accelerates up to the limit, brakes back down to around 104km/h, then accelerates again. It repeats this cycle for as long as the 110km/h zone lasts. It’s not a one-off glitch; it happened every time I hit a 110km/h zone on this drive.
In some ways, it’s worse than Tesla FSD V13. The old software would at least settle around 110km/h for a couple of kilometres before drifting back to 100km/h. Tesla FSD V14 never settles in the zone. It oscillates instead.
With 110km/h zones making up roughly 80% of my regional driving, this single issue is enough to stop me trusting Tesla FSD V14 for the majority of my trips, even with every other improvement it brings.
If most of your driving happens in suburban or lower-speed zones, Tesla FSD V14 is a genuine upgrade over version 13. Faster acceleration, accurate speed limits, and a smoother roundabout experience make daily driving noticeably less stressful.
If your driving is mostly on regional highways, sitting at 110km/h, hold off. Wait for Tesla to patch the 110km/h oscillation before relying on it for long country trips, and keep a hand near the wheel in the meantime.
